11eleven..
My wife and I never dated. The truth is she flat out turned me down when I asked her out. It took me nearly six years to find the right time and opportunity and she refused. So, after I submitted character references from our mutual friends and confessed that I thought she was interesting and I just wanted to 'hang out', I asked her one last time...for her final answer...and she said 'yes!'
Not long after I started "hanging out" with my wife, the numbers "1111" began to show up EVERYWHERE. I noticed it first on clocks (that's why we always referred to it as 11:11) and the weirdest part is that it didn't matter which clock I looked at or what time of day it actually was, more often than not, it would be 11:11 or 11 minutes past the hour. I know it sounds like maybe the clock stopped but no, this was on many different clocks; dashboard clocks in cars, clocks on stoves, wall clocks, microwave oven clocks. It was wild.
But then it began showing up in other places. On invoices, license plates, our order number for our pizza, among others. It was becoming clear to us that someone was trying to tell us something. We told ourselves that we were forcing it, that we were subconsciously looking for the number. It was there all along, right?
Well, it kept coming up. The suffix of a close relative's phone number,1111, Sylvia's birthday, my sister's and my father's birthday, AND the anniversary of my grandparent's are all on the 22nd (eleven and eleven). So, to satisfy our curiosities, we looked in bibles, reference books, astrological and dream books, anything we could find that might explain the repeated appearance of this number. We found nothing that we thought justified it's representation.
We thought we had an answer on the day that I proposed to my wife. I had a huge day planned for Valentine's Day in 1995. But the one thing that I hadn't planned on was at what point I would actually ask for her hand. It just had to feel right.
I started the day with a two-song serenade, a box of candy for her and one for her mother, a dozen red roses and, a banner that said "I love you Sylvia" across the sidewalk in front of her house. I had laid out a day that included a Napa Valley Train Luncheon through wine country, a ferry ride from San Francisco to a bayside restaurant for dinner, and horse and buggy ride to a comedy show. The theme was "getting there". There must've been a dozen opportunities (or maybe it was only eleven) to propose but none struck me as "the right time".
To cut to the chase, I ended up proposing to her that evening at 11:11pm. The funny thing was that I hadn't even noticed. I was on my knee telling her about the theme of "getting there". How it didn't matter how we got anywhere in our lives but that we were together when we did. She cried and buried her face in my chest for I don't know how long. When she finally pulled back from me to say "yes", she turned her head and said "Look at the time!".
We had our answer; destiny. But that wasn't it...entirely.
Two months later, I got a job at the company I'm working for now. It was my first day of work and my first task was to enter information into a database for software registration. Of course the very first serial number I entered contained 1111. I went to share the story with my new co-workers, one told me "you're kidding" and I said "No, really you wouldn't believe where this number pops up."
She said, "I married my husband on 11/11 at 11:11am because it's an old Buddhist belief to do what makes you happiest at eleven-eleven." I couldn't believe it. And the fact that she referred to it as eleven-eleven too.
Finally, there was an explanation that we could agree on. We have found true happiness in each other and it's revealing itself in this number. The only thing is we're not Buddhist. Aw, so what? That doesn't matter.
The number represents what makes us happy and serves as a constant reminder of the happiness we share. I love my wife like I have never loved anything before and the fact that she loves me makes me the happiest man alive.
