Deep Thoughts

My Love in Her Attire

This is a poem that I have enjoyed since I first read it. I think that it is humorous, as well as being complimentary and that it gives some insight into the real thoughts men generally have towards their 'loves'.

My Love in Her Attire
My love in her attire doth show her wit,
It doth so well become her:
For every season she hath dressings fit,
For winter, spring, and summer.
No beauty she doth miss,
When all her clothes are on;
But Beauty's self she is,
When all her robes are gone.
-Anonymous

I found this poem in the book "The Top 500 Poems" edited by William Harmon. He has the poem as being written c.1400-c.1600. It just goes to show that men have found looking at women a pleasure for quite some time. He has the poem ranked #393. If you enjoy poetry at all, I would highly recommend this book. He gives history on many of the poets and is able to give insight into some of the more arcane poems. Enjoy.
