Deep Thoughts

The evil-eye

There is a diabolic power given to certain creatiures and when, in some
soul--bereaved body, this vile force inhearits sight-- a hideous monster from some godless abyss looks upon a mortal world.

This is Satan emerging from the darkness to loose heinous sins, and wickness, and despair eternal; this is the evil-eye thats blights, and cripples, and poisons.

How it gleams ! this hellish eye in a mortal body, this fiendish orb that twists one's heart and warps one's brian and cankers one's soul.Sinister, malevolent, but with all the magnetism of the unknown-- it snares the unwary, entrances the curious, binds the passive, cojoles the indulgent until the tentacles of its loathesome influence have strangled every will and faculty.

Here is craft and cunning and treacchery and merciless brutality. Here is unholy scope that cad profane generations by a glance. Here is a look thats cast a curse upon all humanity at once. Here is the evil-eye thats says: "Succumb"....I am the fruit of happiness. Follow me!....only fools resist."

Here is the infernal temptation of the lust and greed and physical comfort and self love and pride. Here is mortaldegradation, sloth, faithless worship, and blasphemous revelry. The mysteries of ages--the enigmatic contradictions of war from peace, of poverty from wealth, of human suffering uncer mortal laws were thus explained..

The contamination of the evil-eye affects even the innocent and the pure. Even as a plague may smite those who are clean, so the vile power of the evil-eye wrecks its spiteful vengeance upon those who make a sign and looks away.

The ancient mystics acknowledged the potency of the evil-eye and labored to twart it. But modern science the iconoclast of tradition and superstition and the miracles of the unknown is cynacil in its refutations . But science has long and continually succumbed to the foul influence of the superstition it has rejected.

The wonderous progress and advancement of science did not eliminate the miseries of hunanity but frequently added to them.
Thus we have airplanes and medicines and new chemicals and the atomic bomb; and we also have buttets for war and explosives for destruction and poison gas and liquid fire to burn human bodies and a working possibility of imminent world annihilation.

A scientist devotes his talents to improve the life of his neighbor; sconfully, he xposes him self to the hyponotic effect of the evil-eye; presto! the scientist directs his zeal toward descovery of an agent that will result in the exterimination of his neighbor.

There is no motive of self gain from the diabolical invention: he is not impelled by malice or hate; he feels no threath to his personal security .....what then? Who knows but that an evil look may pollenate anothrer's soul just as a flower cast its seeds to the wind?

We are constantly striving to emulate others; we are forever seeking what other's possess. Perhaps if we make the sign, if we avert our eyes, if we look toward heaven--perhaps we may strengthen our resistance to the baneful demon... to the temptation and the iniquity and the mesmerism of the evil-eye.
